Colby Thomson and Roger Obrist met at the 2003 E-day event put on by
the Kansas City-based Entrepreneurial-Exchange group. As the second day
of the two-day Entrepreneur's conference was winding down, Roger and
Colby discussed how beneficial the event had been, and wondered if
there wasn't a need for such an event that targeted younger
entrepreneurs.
Several aspects of the event were less than ideal for a younger startup
crowd:
- $200+ price tag
to attend
- Not-so-slight
out-of-place feeling
- Most event
speakers and attendees
were well past the startup phase of their business
- Lack of
one-on-one problem
solving and mentorship
- Limited
resources for new
entrepreneurs
In short, E-day was targeting a different sort of entrepreneur, perhaps
an experienced business owner in need of networking and example
to take
his or her company to the next level. The event provided great
inspiration, but what to do next? How does one actually go about
starting a successful company?
